The Ultimate Guide
to Family Photo Sessions
Got an upcoming family photoshoot? I've got you covered - from choosing the right location, preparing your kids for the session, and styling your outfits.
"What Should I Wear?"
Choosing the right outfit can make ALL the difference in your photos.

Here's what tends to work:
✔ Textures and gentle patterns - I can't stress this enough! It adds so much dimension to photos
✔ Neutral colors - think about the location of your photoshoot, what would complement the setting? Avoid fluorescent or really bright colors
✔ Play with accessories! Layer clothing and jewelry to add depth and texture
✔ You want to be able to move around and feel good
✔ Steer clear of logos or words to make sure your images remain timeless
✔ Confidence is key - if you feel great wearing it, this will show in your photos
✔ Flowy dresses or skirts. If you’re a fan, opt for flowy styles that add a touch of movement
✔ Last tip: start with styling one person, and build the rest of the family's looks around it!
Preparing For The Session
Involve your kids in the planning process.
Let your kids know they’re spending a day out with a friend who loves taking pictures. If you’re excited, they’ll definitely catch on!
Try to come to the shoot well rested and well fed.
Leave plenty of time to get ready.
Arrive a little early.
We can get acquainted before your session starts, and you and your family have time to warm up before the shoot!

Family photoshoot with teenagers? Encourage them to choose their outfits or hairstyle and let their personalities shine through.
"Should I Bring Anything?"

If you have mementos and items that you absolutely cherish and would like me to capture, you are most welcome to bring them to the shoot.
Some examples would be ultrasound photos, baby shoes, toys, heirloom jewelry, old photos of grandparents, etc.
Feel free to bring snacks and drinks for yourselves and the kids. You can also consider an activity that you enjoy doing together as a family.
Do you love to read together? Bring some books. Is your favorite dessert ice cream? Bring some ice cream bars or drumsticks.
Love to play board games or cards? Plan to play a round of Uno during your family photo session.
Other hobbies include: football, piggy back rides, races, hiking, picnics. The ideas are endless.
During the Shoot
Have fun! Feel free to be spontaneous.
Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Give your partner a sweet kiss on the cheek.
Tell them how much you love and appreciate them for being there for your family.
Laugh. Giggle. Joke. Embrace. Play.
These natural moments allow me to capture the genuine emotion and beauty of your family.
If you're feeling awkward or shy, that's totally normal!
